Pivot tables

Any field down the side, any field across the top, and counts, sums or averages in the cells.

A pivot answers "how much of X, broken down by Y and Z". Assignee against sprint. Component against status. Team against month.

Rows and columns

Pick one or more fields down the side and none or more across the top. Several row fields nest: team, then person within team.

Anything in your field list can be a dimension, custom fields included — assignee, status, status category, sprint, component, label, priority, parent, and your own select and user fields. Dates can be grouped by day, week, month or quarter rather than exploding into one column per date.

Values

ValueWhat it does
CountHow many work items in the cell. Needs no field
SumAdds a numeric field — story points, time spent, remaining estimate, or your own
AverageThe mean
Minimum / MaximumThe smallest and largest value
MedianThe middle value. Often the honest one when a few huge items skew the mean

You can have more than one value, and each gets its own column inside every cell.

Totals

Row and column totals are computed from the underlying work items, not by adding the cells. For count and sum those agree — unless a work item sits in several rows (several labels or sprints), because a total counts it once. For average, minimum, maximum and median they do not, and adding the cells would be wrong — the average of four averages is not the average.

Empty cells

A cell with no work items is blank, not 0. A work item whose field is empty gets its own group, labeled so — "None", or "Unassigned" for a person field — rather than being dropped silently. Dropping them is how a total quietly stops matching Jira.

Clicking a cell

Click any cell to see the work items behind it, each linking into Jira. This is the fastest way to find out why a number is not what you expected. The list shows the first 1,000; export the report to see them all.

Large pivots

Above 200 rows the table scrolls inside its own box and draws only what is visible, with the row numbers kept honest for screen readers. Export and print always include every row.
