Your first report
Pick a source, choose what to roll up, save. About five minutes.
Open Apps → RollGrid and press Create report.
1. Source
This is the one decision that changes everything downstream: it decides which work items the report reads.
| Source | Use it when |
|---|---|
| Space (project) | You want everything in one space. Simplest, and usually right to start with |
| Saved filter | You already have a saved filter that says what you mean |
| JQL | You want something a filter does not cover. The editor shows the JQL it will run |
| Board | Not a source yet; it is coming. A board shows a saved filter, so pick that filter instead (Board settings names it) and use Sprint as a pivot column |
| A work item and everything under it | You want one initiative or epic and everything under it |
Under the source are four switches that widen the read: Children, Parents, Siblings and Done work items. Children is the one that matters for roll-ups — without it, a report of epics has nothing underneath to roll up.
As soon as a source is picked, the editor says roughly how many work items it will read. If that number is near the cap, narrow it now rather than after a slow load.
2. Hierarchy
Jira's own parent links give you sub-task → story → epic for free. If your initiatives sit above epics through an issue link rather than a parent field, add a link level here and say which link type and which direction. Roll-ups and hierarchy explains this in full.
3. Slices
Optional. A slice is a saved cut of the same report — one per team, say — so you open the report once and switch between them without rebuilding anything. Each slice is read and cached on its own, the first time someone opens it.
4. Tabs
Add up to six. Most reports are two: a Structure tab for the shape and a Pivot tab for the summary. A new report starts with a Structure tab that sums story points.
Tabs decide what gets fetched. A Timesheet tab, or the "In progress, no time logged" warning, makes the report read worklogs as well as work items, which costs more and takes longer. Remove a tab you do not use and the next load gets cheaper.
5. Sharing
Private to you, shared with named people and groups, or shared with everyone who can open RollGrid. Sharing a report never shares data: each viewer still only sees work items their own Jira permissions allow. See sharing and permissions.
Save
Press Save report. If you press Cancel with unsaved changes, RollGrid asks first — and if you say no, nothing is lost. Leaving through Jira's own menus does not ask.
From the saved report you can Refresh (ask Jira again), Export (Excel, CSV or print) and Edit.
